Full Text

An Admonition To Lovely Women.

By the lines of grace and beauty By the claims of social duty By the space at London balls! By the width of playhouse stalls! By your churches' narrow pews By the hansoms that you use! By your zest for healthy sports By golf-links and tennis-court! By your passion for the dance! By your love of elegance! By the style which you affect! By the worship you expect! By the ease which you desire! By your fear of death from fire! By your dread of Punch's jeers! By your awe of Oscar's sneers! By the pictures drawn by Leech! By the lessons doctors teach! By the warnings you have heard By your sense of what's absurd! By the aesthetic's sore distress! By the risk of ugliness! By the hoops of monstrous size. Which would turn you into guys, Oh, your sex's might assert, And defy the whaleboned skirt! Vow that you will never feel Round your waist a cage of steel! And that, come what may, you mean Not to take to crinoline -London Truth
