Full Text

The Butterfield Route.—It has been stated that a scheme is on foot between the Postmaster General and Mr. Butterfield of the Overland mail company, by which the latter shall contract to move the eastern section of their route down upon the San Antonio and El Paso route. On this subject the New York Times says:

Should the contract be signed, there will be a jolly row in both Houses over the subject, and the opponents of the Butterfielders will claim with success that this change is a violation of the law under which the Butterfield service was originally let, and that it abrogates their contract altogether, leaving Congress at liberty to legislate for a new and improved overland service.
