One of Russia's top scientists, an authority on the atom and space travel, is Professor Peter L. Kapitsa. He was educated at Cambridge, England, and spent about fourteen years there in scientific research and in the construction of a very important, highly technical laboratory.
In 1935 he went to Moscow and did not return. Whether he stayed voluntarily or was forced to stay is not known. A little later the Russian Communists offered to buy his laboratory and equipment from the British for a reputed $90,000.
The British Government was very obliging, as usual, and delivered everything to Communist Russia, even sending two trained assistants to help reassemble the laboratory on Russian soil. As Lord Hailsham, chairman of Britain's Conservative Party, puts it, "we gave the Russians the satellite."
Before we decide to pool all atomic and missile information in a common program with Britain and France, we would do well to remember that France's leading atomic physicist is Pierre Joliot-Curie, an avowed Communist; and that two of England's top atomic physicists Klaus Fuchs and Bruno Pontecorvo were both spies for Russia. Furthermore, Burgess and McLean after gathering up all possible information, both in Washington and London, defected to Communist Russia where they with many others are now aiding our enemies.
We can't stand much more of that even for a common program.
