From the New-York Mercury, June 27.

My Countrymen,

While our cruel and crafty Enemy the French, are rushing upon us from every Side, brandishing the Sword with Insolence even within our own Territories: Can we the Posterity of those noble Heroes, who for the Sake of Liberty trusted themselves to the licentious Waves, endured almost innumerable Hardships, Fatigues and Dangers, in a howling Wilderness? Can we, I say, their Posterity, remain in a scandalous Inaction, while we see our Country ranack'd, Wives kill'd, innocent Children murder'd and aged Parents destroyed, as we evidently must do, if we refuse to exert our utmost for the Defence of our Country?

Should any one go into the Field, and there boldly sell his Life on the Bed of Honour, shall he then be forgotten? No he shall be enrolled in the Annals of eternal Fame. his Name shall be handed down from Generation to Generation, nor shall it be obliterated as long as the Sun, the Moon, or Stars shall continue to grace yon Canopy of Heaven; then can refuse our Assistance when our Country calls us. if the Enemy got Possession of yet save our Liberty be doom'd to perpetual Slavery, which to an Englishman is worse than Death. May those who are gone into the Field be incensed at the Barbarity of the Enemy, and take the Field with an undaunted Resolution, to conquer or die. May they be brave! be strong! be courageous! And then (as they are in a good Cause) will the Lord God of Armies protect and defend them, in the Day in which they shall be called to face the Enemy in the Field.

Let us who remain free from the Dangers of a Camp, and for whose Defence our Heroes have march'd into the Field, chearfully obey our Rulers, by deducting from our Substance such a Part as they shall think necessary to defray the Charges of an expensive Campaign.—Finally, may we all, and every one of us, be posses'd of Loyalty to our Sovereign, and Love to our Country, which always was, and now is, the Characteristick of an Englishman.
