WASHINGTON, Aug. 22- (P) - Membership in the U. S. Communist Party has dropped from 54,174 to 43,217 in a year's time, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover has told Senators.
And each party member now has back of him about seven to eight fellow travellers, as against ten several years ago, Hoover told a Senate appropriations subcommittee March 1 while testifying in support of his request for funds. His testimony was made public today.
But Hoover cautioned that the remaining party members constitute "a hardy core dedicated to sabotage and to militant revolt against this country if and when the time comes."
