Yesterday's mail from France brings an account from Epernay, in Champagne, that on the 31st ult. (their great market day) a wolf came into that town at 6 in the morning, and seized a girl with a lanthorn in her hand, and after tearing out one of her eyes, attacked another person with still more fury! The daughter of the latter running to assist her father, was wounded in several parts. A sawer, who came up on hearing the shrieks of those unfortunate people, was thrown down, but had strength enough to hold the animal by the ears until his comrade joined him. The latter, though unarmed, seized the wolf by the throat, and holding his two paws in one hand at the same time that he pressed his sides with his knees, drew a knife and endeavoured to stab him, but the blade was too weak. He called out to his wife for a stronger knife, but she brought him one little better than the first, so that he was obliged to wait until a third could be procured, with which this brave fellow pierced the heart of the animal, and received no hurt himself. The Intendant of the province, who happened to be in the town at that time, handsomely rewarded him for his courage, and ordered the wounded people to be taken proper care of.
