New Road From Wilmington to Pennsylvania State Line Urged By E. B. Griffenberg
DUAL HIGHWAY WORK

Highway construction and repair work totaling $157,142.85, part of which is to come from the Federal emergency fund, will be started in Delaware shortly if four contracts are to be awarded on the lowest bids opened yesterday by the State Highway Department.

The work will include 2,900 feet of paving on Washington Street in the city of Wilmington from where the street now ends to where it will connect with the Forty-third Street cut-off, which in turn connects with the Philadelphia Pike near Shellpot Park. Bids were also received on paving the section of the new dual highway south of Wilmington from Farnhurst to Rogers' Corner, a distance of 2.158 miles; on providing surface treatment for 40 miles of highway and on providing chip surface treatment.

State Senator E. B. Griffenberg appeared at the meeting and presented a petition of residents north of Wilmington requesting construction of a highway to parallel the Pennsylvania Railroad from Wilmington north to the State line. This project, he said, would relieve traffic on the Philadelphia Pike. He said all residents along the proposed route have offered to furnish the right of way, free of charge.

A delegation representing 24 farmers living on the road between Selbyville and Gumboro appeared requesting construction of a concrete road between those two towns, a distance of about three miles. This delegation also said that a free right of way could probably be obtained.

The delegation pleaded that the farmers have no convenient way of reaching churches and schools or of getting their produce to market.

The commissioners took the two petitions under consideration, deferring action.

The bids received will be studied and awards will probably be made within the next 10 days.
