Don Piatt, the racy correspondent of the Cincinnati Commercial thus writes of the late Presidential fishing party:
"The meanest part of the late capture of the Administration, by the virtuous old Simon Cameron, was in the carting away of our Marine Band. What in the old scratch they wanted with a full band on a fishing excursion confounds the will and bothers the understanding. Such things are common on the stage, because, they are uncommon elsewhere. In the melodrama and the opera, when the bandit, in the mountain gorge that has no end of rocks built upon plank floor, is about to tableaux, 20 females in brief drapery and unlimited legs, come out as the ballet, to a full band. Does the virtuous old Cameron contemplate something of the sort while catching trout in the mountains of Pennsylvania, that he has taken our band? If so, I would suggest that he drape his ballet troupe with the principles of his party in Pennsylvania. If their nakedness is not exhibited, then the devil's in it. What a lovely group could be made of the Goddess of Protection! The venerable Simon standing in the rear, one arm supporting the old painted female, the other raised gracefully to the Heavens; the goddess on the tip-end of her right toe, bends back until her body makes a perfect curve; then she throws her left out on a level with the eye of the Administration that stands by on its last leg. To the right, put General Dent, supporting his tremendous nose on a spear. On the rocks, in picturesque attitude, have Pigiron Kelly, Pound Cake, my little Dickey, Morrell and others as brigands and thieves. In the back ground have the Republican party as a dissolving view. Music by the band the somewhat new and novel air, "Shoo, fly! don't bodder me!""
