Storm Unabated, Drives Northeast to Atlantic Seaboard: Tornadic Wind Rips Across Half of Nation
BY UNITED PRESS
Terrific gales swept across a path of desolation in the south and midwest Saturday, driving the worst April storm in history northeastward toward the Atlantic seaboard. Forty-eight persons were dead, victims of floods, tornadoes and raging blizzards.
Sixty others were missing in six states hit by the storm center as it blasted its way from the Canadian plains to the Gulf of Mexico and back again. It roared from the northwest Wednesday, laid a paralyzing blanket of snow and ice across north central states from the Rocky Mountains to the Ohio Valley then turned and, swinging in a great semi-circle, moved into the south.
The Texas Panhandle was stricken by a blizzard; tornadic winds whipped across Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi; floods caused heavy damage in Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Indiana and Illinois; to the north, states in the Great Lakes region battled heavy snows and sleet; rain and snow checkered the Atlantic coast.
The storm's center moved over southern Illinois and Kentucky Saturday.
Red Cross officials and rescue workers said the total of lives lost and property damage would not be known until a complete check could be made and communications reestablished.
The known dead: Alabama, 13; Indiana, 10; Illinois, 10; Texas 7; Georgia, 4; Missouri, 3; and Iowa, 1.
Forty five persons were missing in snowbound sections of the Texas Panhandle, nine in a flood zone near Whitestone, Ga., two in Illinois, and four on snow blocked highways near El City, Okla.

Thousands of persons were driven from their homes. U S Weather Forecaster J R Lloyd at Chicago said little if any additional rain would fall in southern flood areas but predicted warmer temperatures—a serious threat for snow burdened flood districts.
The worst blizzard since 1916 lashed the Texas Panhandle Friday. Seven persons were asphyxiated by gas at Pampa, Tex., in 2 small house in which they apparently had sealed themselves to escape the storm.
