Full Text

Fine.—Last evening, a little before 6 o'clock, a fire broke out in the lower story of the Franklin Hemp and Flax Manufactory, for the manufacture of cotton bagging, in Northampton street, near the continuation of Front street. The building was a large one, principally of wood, and the fire took in the lower story near the staircase, about the time of lighting up, supposed from a spark or from friction of the machinery; it spread very rapidly, and in a short time the whole building was destroyed. The manufactory had but recently gone into successful operation, and contained much valuable machinery, stock, &c. The loss is estimated at about $40,000, which is nearly covered by insurance. We learn, in addition, that some of the laborers escaped with difficulty, and that one man was obliged to jump from a window, by which one of his legs was broken and that one young woman is missing.—Boston Gazette.
