[Special Correspondence.]
The actors of this city—which means the actors of the United States—have another grievance, or rather an old grievance in an aggravated form. There are now here five English companies, and without a single exception they have brought their players with them from the other side of the water. This, it is asserted by the American histrions, has the effect of depriving a couple of hundred of them of work. There has been a good deal of talking over the matter, but actors have been known to indulge in that pastime before, and it does not necessarily signify that anything will be done. Still they pretend to mean business this time and assert that they will send a committee to congress to urge legislation which will correct the trouble. One of the leaders says that it is all nonsense to talk about keeping out all foreign players except the star who may wish to come over here with companies. His idea is to require the star to employ as many persons in this country as he may bring over. This would thus compel him to have at least half of his performers American.
