Political observers in both nations feels that this action by the two presidents means a progressive future for both nations With both of them at peace with each other they now will have time to develop without fear of an attack from their neighbor. In the past these two nations although they shared the same island, have not been very friendly. Only two years ago, the Dominicans were accused of plotting against the life of Dumarsais Estime, then president of Haiti. From time to time each nation has accused the other of military plots against it. Negotiations or proposed negotiations between the two nations usually were marked by hot tempers and distrust. Because of this continued hostility, both countries kept their common border fortified. The conference between the leaders of these two states promises more cooperation in civic ventures such as improvement of such items as tourist facilities and probably farm facilities, and other activities.
