RIO DEL NORTE, March 3, 1848.
GENTLEMEN: Gen. Price and staff left this place two days since, accompanied by the following detached commands: Companies I and G, 1st United States Dragoons, and Major Beall, 1st Dragoons commanding; McNair's, Korpany's, Clarkson's and Lofland's companies of Missouri Mounted Regiment of Volunteers, Col. Ralls, commanding.
The Santa Fe Battalion (Major Walker's) moved two weeks since, and is now probably at Presidio, one hundred and twenty miles south.
Lieut. Col. Easton will move to-morrow with the remaining troops now at this post, comprising the following commands: the St. Louis Battalion; two companies of Ralls' regiment, (Lieut. Col. Lane in command;) company B, 1st U.S. Dragoons serving as light artillery, Lieut. Long commanding, Captain Hendershott's battery artillery, and a large provision train.
It is thought that all the troops will concentrate at Presidio, and arrange for the direct march upon Chihuahua. This is not known certain, as every thing has been conducted with much secresy (in regard to future movements of troops) at head-quarters.
The usual number of marvelous rumors are afloat as to what the brave Mexicans intend to do. The last I have heard, which seems to some credit is, that Gen. Urrea is at Chihuahua in command of 3000 troops determined to defend the city, which I no doubt he will do after the most approved fashion of Mexican pah bluster and the like. Our troops expect to be safe in Chihuahua before the close of the present month.
Compared with last year, very few merchant trains will go through with the army to Chihuahua. Two trains, White & Brothers, and Turner, Allen & Co.'s., will leave here in a day or two—these are Sutlers' trains, with goods for the troops. Two or three small trains are expected here from Santa Fe, with goods for the Mexican trade.
The market at Chihuahua is represented as being destitute of almost every article of merchandise except bleached domestics, of which there is now a very large supply on hand and selling at low prices, equal to cost and transportation.
