Condition of the Crops.
From a gentleman, a close observer, who arrived in the city yesterday from a tour of North Texas, extending as far south as Austin and Hearne, and as far west as Lampasas, a Herald reporter learned something concerning the present condition of the crops. He reports that cotton is maturing too rapidly. The early blooms, which have a dingy, reddish appearance, will prevent the plant bolling out as it should. Rain is badly needed and if not had within the next few days the crop will be badly injured by drouth. Planters are of the belief that a good soaking rain would bring the crop out and be the making of it. It has had too much warm weather and sunshine, which has caused the plant to mature faster than it should. The crop last year was in about the same condition as it is this season, but a timely soaking rainfall on the 6th of August gave it new life and there was a fair yield. The corn, which is almost matured, is suffering for rain, which would be very beneficial, notwithstanding the late season.
Commercial travelers report trade dull. The farmers and country merchants are holding up awaiting a rain. A good rainfall would revive trade more than anything else.
