ST. LOUIS, Mo., May 17-Ira McClenden, aged 19, a patient at the City hospital No. 2, was captured a block from Laclede avenue police station early Wednesday morning after he had jumped from a second story window of the hospital and escaped.
According to hospital attaches when McClenden was told that he would have to undergo a minor operation he began to offer prayers and tell them of how many persons he had known who had gone to the hospital and died from an operation.
It is thought that the fear of the impending operation preyed on the boy's mind all night and he made his escape at first opportunity.
Being clad only in night clothes as he fled along the street bare-footed attracted pedestrians going to work at that early hour. A telephone call to the Laclede station informing them that a "crazy" man was running in that direction caused the police to be on the lookout for him.
McClendon virtually ran into the arms of a waiting cop.
