Making his managerial bow was
Eddie Stanky of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Rogers Hornsby of the St.
Louis Browns and Lou Boudreau as of the Boston Red Sox were back
as big league pilots. Tom
Holmes of the Boston Braves and
Phil Cavarretta of the Chicago
Cubs were starting their first full
season as managers.

All managers were optimistic,
with Al Lopez of the Cleveland Indians brashly predicting a minor league flag. Manager Charlie
Dressen of Brooklyn said the
Dodgers ought to win in the National League.

The odds makers
just
Dressen and Lopez and installed the Indians and Dodgers
favorites.

Brooklyn is an 8-5 choice while
Cleveland is quoted at 9-2 to win
the pennant. The Giants and Yankees
are second choices, therefore
at 5-2 and the latter 2-1. Philadelphia and St. Louis are given
outside chance in the National
while Chicago and Boston in the
American.

President Truman, the nation's
No. 1 fan, and only switch hitter since William Howard Taft started
the presidential pitching custom in
1910, will toss out the first ball in
Washington where the Senators
engage the Red Sox.
