Full Text

Revivals.—We cannot forbear saying a word about the "revivals of religion" which at the present time are agitating almost all denominations, both here and elsewhere.

We regard these "revivals" as the enemies of true piety--as an obstacle to all righteous reform as a mere piece of machinery with which a corrupt priesthood seek to perpetuate their power. They operate through fear and not through love. What are their results?-sectarian bigotry and pharisaical hypocrisy. They convert men to a sect and not to christianity and are among the deadliest enemies to the claims of God and suffering humanity. That the results of these "revivals," may in some few individual instances, be beneficial, we do not doubt, but we speak of their general character. The system is a bad one and like every other error works evil continually.— More anon.G. L. c.
