If any considerable proportion of our captains of industry and railroad magnates regard President Roosevelt with the horror that Chancellor Day voices and the contempt which Rogers, Archbold, Armour and others make no effort to conceal, they should ponder the exalted opinions of him held abroad. Former Senator Washburn, of Minnesota, returns from Russia to tell how the czar privately assured him that "the president is a great man" and "a great head of a great country." On the opening of the Guam-Japan cable the Emperor of Japan replies to the president's greeting with a message of almost personal affection. President Fallieres declares with obvious admiration that there is no peasant in France that does not know President Roosevelt's name. King Edward and Kaiser Wilhelm in the attentions bestowed upon Mr. and Mrs. Longworth are naturally showing a personal interest in the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt. It was quite fitting that Lord Curzon should lay on the compliments a little thicker than usual at the luncheon given to Mr. and Mrs. Longworth in London Friday. Lord Curzon himself has a charming American wife, and, as he says of President Roosevelt, has done his share toward cementing the friendly relations between the two peoples.
The London Spectator two weeks ago said that if Mr. Roosevelt "were to visit England he would have a reception which would rival that given to Garibaldi at the height of his popularity."
Mr. Roosevelt is known to be honest, incorruptible, vigorous, vivacious, a hard hitter. He satisfies the world's constant love of the unexpected. It was in danger of being bored after the war in Manchuria ended. He has helped save it from that experience, and the packers and Standard Oil and railroad people, too, although they are not so grateful.-New York World.
