HE FEELS 'LIKE A HEEL'
In light of the preliminary report of the Chamber of Commerce "rumor clinic" committee, a number of persons in Ventura and Ojai ought to feel very foolish and thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
We refer to the ones who in recent days have industriously spread ever-more-lurid fictions about asserted enormous waste of food at local army camps.
No doubt a great many of them already do feel that way. One Ojai business man, questioned by an army officer about a version of the tale he admitted passing on, remarked, "You make me feel like a heel." Otherwise good citizens who gullibly peddle such stories as have been flying about very properly should feel that way.
Where these malicious whispering campaigns originate is something else again. It already has been ascertained that one family long known in the community for its pro-nazi utterances helped circulate one of the Ojai food waste stories promptly proved to be entirely false. Perhaps in some such center will be found the source of the trouble making. The committee and the army authorities should keep on investigating.
