Full Text
The Spectator in publishing the late proceedings in the Beaufort District, in South Carolina, calls the attention of its Northern friends particularly, to "the peculiar views of the Southern people," as there developed. "Peculiar," they undoubtedly will be considered—but that the Southern People entertain, avow, or will uphold any such views—peculiar as they may be,—we utterly deny. Beaufort district is not the South; nor are Mr. R. Barnwell Rhett's constituents, planters, and nabobs though they may be, the people of the South. The South will no more support Nullification and Disunion because of Texas, than it supported those heresies because of Cotton! These "chivalric" exclusives are making a great mistake about this whole matter.— They will find it out before long.
