Full Text

The Augusta papers state that the officer in charge of Mr. Kernaghan was somewhat surprised on arriving in Augusta at having his prisoner spirited away by another habeas corpus, issued by Judge Snead. The Constitutionalist says: "We are entirely at a loss to understand upon what semblance of justice to the accused, the Executive of Georgia orders his arraignment in Atlanta, when the killing of Rufin took place in this city. This unusual, illegal, and unwarranted proceeding indicates to our mind a preconcerted and settled purpose to make a victim, irrespective of all considerations of law and justice, by a partnership arrangement perfected between the officials of Georgia and Hubbard, Scott & Co., of South Carolina."
