SEASON
AT CENTRAL
OPENS TODAY
With weather conditions favorable Coach Armstrong will put the Union Central High school football warriors through their opening workout of the 1927 season this afternoon. Many youngsters have reported to the coach for grid duty and with at least seven veterans to rely upon prospects for a banner season are in the offing.
The squad began reporting to the coach Monday night and each evening has found a few more at the field ready to don moleskins and get about the business of learning the pigskin game. Today, however, will mark the first real workout for the squad.
Coach Armstrong is being assisted by Ernie Sanders this year in getting the team into shape for the season. Sanders assisted the coach in 1924 when Union Central turned out a championship team and with plenty of material to work with the combination is expected to put another speedy outfit in the field this year.
Shirley Oberfelt is looked to by the coaches to fill the shoes of "Bill" Peters, whose work on the grid kept El Centro in the limelight during the last few years. Peters, by the way, is expected to enter U. S. C. this fall. While Oberfelt has plenty of work cut out for him he has shown up exceptionally well during the last season and gives the team a good foundation upon which to build.
Paul Gillett, McBride, Bill Foss, John Byrd and Earl Briggs will be among the veteran backfield men. All are experienced in the grid game and should go better than ever this season.
The line promises to be a problem but with Captain Robert Hickcox at tackle and Virgil Hamilton at center a foundation is laid. A wealth of new material will be tried out. Several likely looking prospects are among new arrivals in the valley.
While Coach Armstrong is not predicting any championship team, he is satisfied that the Central Union boys will be very much in the battle.
