From the Baltimore Republican

WASHINGTON IRVING.

The appointment of this gentleman to the post of Minister to Spain does high honor to President TYLER. Few men have done more to reflect honor on his country, and to illustrate the American name, than the author of the Life of Columbus. Though not a politician, Mr. Irving, by his studies, his character, his acquaintance with the language, the institutions and the eminent men of the country to which he is going, is peculiarly, pre-eminently qualified for the office of Minister to Madrid. There is an appropriateness in the appointment, which cannot fail to commend it to every right-minded man in the country. A genuine and uncompromising Democrat and intimate personal friend of Mr. Van Buren, as Mr. Irving is known to be, it speaks well for the liberality and independence of President TYLER, that he should have passed by all the seekers, the political mendicants, claiming the "reward" of partisan services, to confer this high appointment on unobtrusive merit.

The small-fry politicians, unable to say aught against the fitness, in every sense, of Mr. Irving for this post, seem to be willing to make a merit of admitting it; but cannot help qualifying it with the remark, that—"if Mr. Tyler expects to make any political capital by it, he will find himself mistaken." We have no idea that President Tyler thought of making any other capital by it than a capital appointment, and in that he certainly has not been mistaken. But we tell these Whiglings that they are mistaken. The appointment reflects credit upon the discrimination, the patriotism, the liberality and the independence of Mr. Tyler, and, in the moral influence which the evidence of these affords, cannot, and ought not to, fail to strengthen his political influence. The Democratic party will, unanimously, say—"Well done!" and all of the Whig party, who love their country better than they love Henry Clay, will say, "Amen!"

We take this occasion to say, that while there are some of the appointments, here and elsewhere, and many of the removals of Mr. Tyler, which meet our decided disapprobation, we are willing, in view of the peculiarity of his position, to make many allowances, and to acknowledge, in the numerous RE-appointments, and, in some cases, original appointments, of Democrats, the manifestation of a spirit of liberality and justice, which we think do him honor.
