Full Text

Typhus Fever in New York.—The New York Gazette of Saturday says in a postscript:—"Since the above was written, we have conversed with a physician, who informs us that the typhus fever of emigrants is already prevailing to some extent in this city. There is one house—No 85 Mott street—where eleven people sleep in one room, in a back basement with but one window in it, the house being a common two story house. There had been in this room five or six cases of the typhus fever; some of these cases originated on board ship. This is the fever which has been raging in Bellevue. There are also in other parts of the city, many cases of this fever, particularly in those parts where the emigrants are in the habit of resorting. If in hot weather, from an excess of population and in crowded parts of the city, this fever should become malignant, it might be as dangerous as the cholera or the yellow fever."
