MRS. GLADYS SELMON SUES VILLAGE OF ROBBINS

WINS $950.00 JUDGMENT

Tuesday, November 15, 1960, Mrs. Gladys Selmon, who formerly operated a florist shop here in the village; an erstwhile politician affiliated with the Independent Citizens Party, won a suit against the Village of Robbins.

In Judge Carns court,

Mrs. Selmon was awarded

judgment against the Village

of Robbins in the

sum of $950.00. The money

is to be paid in two installments,

the first of

which is $500.00, due and

payable on the first day

of December, 1960.

In April, 1957, when Mr.

Maxey

was elected

president of the village, Mrs.

Selmon, along with other

Independent Citizens Party

candidates ran and lost by

22 votes, in her bid for Village

Clerk.

Incidentally,

she

was

the

only

one on

the

ICP

ticket

who did

not win!

It is

alleged that party

bigwigs in order to reward

her for services in the

MRS. GLADYS SELMON

campaign "created a job"

for

her in the police department

at

$200.00 per month. This brought a howl from the press, the public

and some of the ICP

members themselves. They asked: Why

should she, after being repudiated at the polls, be given as good

a job as she would have had if she had been elected Village

Clerk? Anyway, the howls continued long and loud and she was

finally

discharged.

The suit Tuesday and the awarding of the $950.00 judgment

in favor of Mrs. Selmon was the result of this incident, or series

of incidents. Atty. George A. Gordon handled the case for Mrs.

Selmon and Atty. Walter K. Black appeared for the Village of

Robbins. No other Village official was present at the trial.
