Boston, December 29.—Colonel Joseph D. Learned, of the 34th regt U. S. Infantry has been lately tried by a court martial, convened at Portland, of which Brig. General Chandler was president, and found Guilty of "fraud and embezzlement of public monies."—It was proved that in the summer of 1813, he procured 700 cartridge boxes, belts and bayonet scabbards, to be made on account of the U. States, at $1 75 for each set, and paid for them at that rate: but contrived to obtain a receipt for them, at the rate of two dollars per set, by which means he obtained of the Deputy Commissary of Purchases, payment of the latter rate, thereby making a profit to himself of 25 cents on each set, amounting in the whole to 175 dollars. He was found guilty likewise, on other charges, and sentenced to be Cashiered, which sentence is approved by the commanding officer of this district, and the said Col. Learned is no longer an officer of the army.
