POLICE COURT. Yesterday morning considerable excitement was caused in the court, which was crowded by a very respectable company, owing to the arrest of a French gentleman lately from Montreal, who had taken lodgings at the Howard street hotel, kept by Mr. Holland. It appeared from the examination of a number of gentlemen, boarders at the hotel, that the person above alluded to took lodgings there early last week—that he had a draft on a respectable house in this city for a sum of money, which was refused payment. He therefore took the stage to visit the drawer of the draft, at Fitzwilliam, N. H. and in the hurry took a pair of boots belonging to Sabina Eastman, who boarded at the above mentioned hotel. It also appeared, that the gentleman had two pair of boots, and did not discover the mistake until he had nearly reached the end of his journey, when he was arrested by Mr. Eastman, (who said he had been an officer 18 years,) was kept handcuffed 26 hours, and committed to our jail on Sunday evening. The court did not see fit to grant a warrant, and he was discharged. The Frenchman appears a gentleman in his manners and his name is Charles G. Lespie, a native of Strasburg, on the lower Rhine. He arrived in this country in June, 1825, landed in New-York, went into the western country, from there to the Canadas, and left Montreal on the 28th of last month for this city, to obtain a passage for his native country. He has, we understand, instituted a suit against Eastman.—Courier.
