PERVERTED PARAGRAPHS.

Democrats know very well that Progressives are going back to the Republican party. Tazewell Republican.

Yes, we know that the Rev. Newt Harman, Eb Witten and others "went back" at Bristol and we know as well as the Republican "why" they went back. They belong to the craw-fish variety of politicians. When their faces are to the east they are traveling west.

The result of this is a heavy disaffection in the Democratic ranks. Tazewell Republican.

Show us one in Tazewell. We'd like to see how a disaffected Democrat looks, when his party controls not only the whole United States, (Ninth district included) but holds the whip hand over the world to boot.

"Result of more than forty years of preparation." American. German Con.

Yes, and the next forty years the people of Germany will be paying indemnities.

The Kaiser thanks God in a general order for his brilliant cooperation with the Crown Prince.—Dispatch.

The mistake that the Emperor makes is in suppressing that "he" is commander in chief and God only his ally. We want to hear what he thinks of this sacrilegious association later on.

Woodrow Wilson has been on the job for peace, on the job for fair taxation, on the job for honest business on the job for selfrespecting industry, on the job for sound currency, and on the job for just banking. We believe that a great people who are also on the job will take care of him and of every member of Congress, no matter what his party label may be who has supported him. N. Y. World.

We expected this from the World but not such an expression as follows:

In all seriousness, the present disposition of certain Democrats leaders and followers in congress to make political capital of the revenue emergency which the president has brought to their notice and to bid just before election for popularity by a further departure from justice and equity in the matter of income taxation affords an additional reason why the president should keep on the job. -N. Y. Sun.

The Sun must be talking for Slemp's benefit. But digest the following from the foremost partizan Republican paper in this country:

He is the best political letter writer we have ever had, and his writing is almost as effective as his speaking Coupled with the fact that he will not be speaking because he will be at his post of duty, his letters will be more effective than speeches made when he might be accused of leaving the national capitol at a critical moment. -Philadelphia Record.

And this from the New York Times which goes on to say that his "record" is made up

He has kept Congress at work for a year and a half, and with his administration not yet at the half way house has accomplished the completion of all of his political program. It is plain why he forced congress, as he puts it, to "stay on the job" for a year and a half.

And the following from the Herald called the "American Thunderer."

President Wilson's announcement that he will attend to the duties of his office instead of devoting this time to political proclivities is none the less welcome and none the less commendable because it is what the American people had a right to expect.

It is to be hoped that the President will realize that one of the first duties the American people expect him to perform is to "swat" the pork barrel bill.

This all dont sound very much like the Declaration of "Principals" formulated by that "splendid body of patriots" assembled at the Bristol convention, which selected a man for Congress whose platform—dual like Austria-Hungary—consists of two sentences,

The Mistakes of Wilson, Services of Slemp.
