We are gratified to learn that the Historical Society of Tennessee, at its January meeting on Tuesday last, received larger and more valuable contributions than at any single meeting heretofore held. Donations were received from Col. Manypenny, Commissioner of Indian Affairs of the U. S., Washington; from J. B. D. DeBow, of New Orleans; from Col. John Foster, of Prince Edward county, Va.; from Messrs. Devereaux & Co., of Philadelphia; from C. L. Derby and J. M. Emerson & Co. of New York; from J. S. Loving, John Ward Dean, and C. B. Richardson, Esq., of Boston; Michael W. Cluskey, Esq., of Washington; from the State Library of Tennessee; from Mrs. J. W. Birdwell, of Davidson county; from E. D. Hicks, Dr. John H. Callender, H. M. R. Fogg, Esq.; John Heriges, A. S. Lindsley, Rev. Elisha Carr, L. P. Williams, Maj. A. H. Ewing, Wm. Hunter, and others, of this city:
The President (A. W. Putnam, Esq.) presented an original letter from Gen. Andrew Jackson, written at Washington in 1829, and one from Mrs. Andrew Jackson, written at Pensacola, Florida, in 1821, and which is thought to be the only letter of hers now in existence. Gen. Jackson's letter is addressed to Capt. John Donelson, and Mrs. Jackson's to the same gentleman, who was her brother. Also—an original letter of Col. John Donelson, (Mrs. Jackson's father,) which is the last letter he ever wrote to his family. These letters were obtained from Col. Stockley Donelson, and are all exceedingly interesting.
President Putnam, (Dr. Felix Robertson in the chair) read a paper in relation to the Battle of King's Mountain, accompanied by various MSS., and printed documents in regard to that celebrated event.
An original letter from John Rutledge (the dictator,) to his brother, Edward Rutledge (signer of the Declaration of Independence) while he was a student at law in the "Temple," at London. The letter was written at Charleston, S. C., in 1769, and is a very interesting document, covering ten closely written pages of foolscap.
"A History of London, its ancient and modern state," printed in 1760, was presented by Mrs. J. W. Birdwell, of this county.
Mr. E. D. Hicks, of this city, presented several papers, among them, two original letters of Gen. James Robertson, written at the Chickasaw Agency, in 1812 and 1813, in relation to the war feeling existing in the Chickasaw and Creek tribes at that period. The letters are addressed to Capt. John Davis.
But the most valuable contributions were made by Thos. Smith, Esq., of this city, among which is a rare old book printed at Venice in 1482, only twenty-three years after the discovery of the glorious art "preservative of all arts." It is folio, full bound in leather, in an excellent state of preservation, and is a valuable treasure. "Ovidii P. Nasonis Fastorum, Libri cum interpretatione Pauli Marsi, Venetiis, 1482." It is probably the first complete edition of the Fasti.
The donations from Boston are very valuable, as indeed are most of the donations received at this meeting. We congratulate the society upon their increasing prospects for usefulness, and have no doubt but that it will go on successfully.
A resolution was warmly adopted, returning thanks to the proprietors of the different newspapers of this city, for publishing their proceedings.
A resolution of thanks to the various contributors, was adopted.
After the transaction of several items of business the Society adjourned till the first Tuesday in February next.
