Board of Trustees Name a Superintendent and Make Plans For Next Year.

The members of the Board of Trustees of the city schools have given the people a guarantee of good schools for another year. Major J. D. Fulp has been named as Superintendent for the next year, and he indicates that he will accept the position. His selection was unanimous, which means that the members of the board are one in believing that we have good schools, and that the schools should be maintained at the present high standard.

The Board also took action looking to increasing the usefulness of the schools. Next year Major Fulp will give his whole time to the work of Superintendent. He will have no classes. A teacher for Latin will be secured. In addition, the school will have a manual training department and a domestic science department.

Two additional teachers will be elected to take over this work. The new high school building has suitable rooms for this work, as well as being equipped for the running of a first class high school.

It is expected that the Bill now before the General Assembly increasing the appropriation for giving free tuition in the high schools will pass, and that the amount received from this source another year locally will be about two thousand dollars more than the amount now received.

If so, we shall be enabled to pay the extra teachers without embarrassment financially. The state pays a portion of the salaries of the teachers of manual training and domestic science.

The members of the Board also provided for a graduated system of paying salaries to the lady teachers. A teacher who is selected a second year will receive an increase of five dollars per month, with a like increase for the third year. This will be something of a reward for faithful work, but more of a testimonial from the members of the board that those who are reelected are doing good work.
