OUR GUESTS.
To the visiting editors who grace the capital of the Great Basin with their intellectual presence today, barely more than a word of greeting need be said; for they are unlike their brethren of the quill generally. If they do not know, without being told, that they are welcome to the best the land affords, and that, for the nonce, everybody they meet and everybody they behold is theirs to command.
The world hemmed in by those snow-capped mountains is therefore their present oyster; and they are most cordially invited to tap it with their trusty weapons and behold how willingly for their pleasure it will open itself.
Of a truth Salt Lake City feels honored in the visit of so distinguished a party. "Moulders of public opinion" this community has ever been glad to meet, and to journalists of repute its greetings and attentions have always been friendly.
Candor requires the statement that these courtesies have not invariably been shown to deserving persons; there have been those whose chief qualifications to local remembrance have been ingratitude and abuse.
But none of these experiences, nor all of them combined, have destroyed the people's confidence in the honor of that human nature which employs itself in writing for the reputable press. A friend in that class is recognized as a friend indeed; and even the most violent enemy renders good service, for in the abundance of his condemnation he can scarcely fail to hit upon some frailty that deserves his rebuke, while unjust criticism and falsehood must at least recoil upon himself.
Without wishing to indulge in reminiscences or homilies, however, the News sincerely joins its brethren of the Utah press in welcoming our guests to the Queen City of the West.
We hope they will find much within our borders to admire, and that their stay will be as pleasant and profitable to them as it is appreciated by those who act as their hosts for the occasion.
