FROEBEL LEADERS
AT DOWNSTATE MEET

Representatives from more than 100 high schools met in convention at North Central high school in Indianapolis on Oct. 18. Froebel Student Council delegates were Ethel Jones, Millicent Wilkinson, Benjamin Coleman, and Charles Richards.

The group left Gary at 5:30 a.m., and the delegates were driven to Indianapolis by Leslie White, our assistant principal. Arriving at their destination at 8, the delegates enjoyed a short sight-seeing trip. North Central high school, built in 1947 at a cost of $3,000,000, is one of the nation's most modern secondary schools. Some unique features of the school are the home economics suite, radio and television control room, and public address system.

North Central also has an elevator for the use of disabled students. Highlighting the school's interior features is the chime system which is used instead of bells system for class dismissal.

In small discussion groups, the students learned of some of the problems with which other student councils are confronted. These were the assortment of "Cliques" in schools, lack of cooperation between students and teachers, and vandalism.

As for improvements in a student council, most of the groups decided that more convocations, bringing all students together to discuss school problems would be a good way to produce a closer relationship between students and teachers.

The Froebel delegates found that some student councils have as many as 100 active members. One of the main handicaps is the large size of our student councils.
