Fount May, Beloved Citizen
If there ever was a man of whom it could be truly written that he was a beloved citizen, Mr. Fount May was that man.
He was born in this county 56 years ago and had lived here all his life. During that lifetime he had held no elective office and had never sought to hold one. He had always been comparatively inactive in politics but his deep interest and wide influence in the religious, civic and agricultural life of the county made him one of the most prominent citizens. His death was a distinct loss to the community, county and state.
Mr. Fount was one of the few people you ever meet with that sterling quality of seeming to always know just what to say at the right time. He was truly a balancing power in the lives of his associates in business, church and civic life. He was at home and perfectly at ease with any crowd or situation.
As chairman of the Gadsden County Selective Service Board he held the most responsible public office of his life.
A monument to his service in that position is that every decision ever made by the board was unanimous. One of the duties he assigned to clerks of the board was that they keep a complete scrapbook on all available news concerning Gadsden County boys in service. He felt a personal interest in the nearly five thousand registrants.
Yes, Mr. Fount is gone to the deep sorrow of every person who was privileged to know him, but his influence will live on from one generation to the next and this county will always be fortunate to have been the home of Fountain H. May.
