Scarcity of Fuel.

Such scarcity of fuel, not only locally, but all over the central and northern portion of the United States was never known in past years. In many places there has been much suffering and some deaths. In the large cities the poor people, who buy only a few cents' worth of fuel at a time, are suffering beyond computation. Their more fortunate neighbors are endeavoring to relieve the poor, but in many instances coal and wood cannot be had for love nor money. The people of Arcola, Ills., held up a railroad train last Saturday, and in so doing got a sufficiency of coal to relieve present necessities. The citizens proposed to pay the railroad for the coal, which was distributed to families needing it, and, it seems, all the people of the town were very needy in this regard. As yet the railroad people have made no disturbance about the hold-up.
