A Negro man known only as Alfred Joseph became the object of a county-wide search when he escaped from highway patrolmen after an automobile accident east of El Centro early Monday night.
While Highway Patrolmen were searching his car, the Negro jumped into a pit beside the highway and disappeared in the brush.
The officers ordered him to stop and fired several shots into the air to enforce their orders but the Negro did not stop.
A vicious looking club carved from a washing machine wringer was found in the car abandoned by the Negro and the license plates on the car were false, the officers said.
There was no registration slip in the car. This led the patrolmen to believe he was driving a stolen car.
Motor numbers will be checked with the Motor Vehicle department in Sacramento in order to ascertain the ownership.
The fugitive Negro was described as five feet eight or nine inches in height and to be dressed in dark trousers and dark coat. His face was deeply marked, possibly with smallpox pits.
He drove his car into the back of a machine driven by Lloyd E. Sowers of Brawley on the Central Valley highway two miles south of the Holtville highway at 9 p. m. Monday night.
