The extract of the letter of Mr. Brown, in the present number, must make a serious impression. When it is considered that Mr. Brown was at that time a member of Congress, the conversations which he held with the Spanish Minister, if not treasonable, were certainly highly culpable. Subsequent events may induce men to change their conduct, but a man who has once betrayed his country, or even listened to overtures to its injury, will be ever after liable to suspicion.
