THE HOT WEATHER

The past week has given us as severe test of patience, as mortals are generally called upon to bear. The weather during that time has been unusually hot, and such a continuation of the heat is something uncommon. You can take any records of the weather, follow them closely, and you will fail to find very often seven days of such weather in succession as that we had last week. There are of course many days when the thermometer stood higher, but it was generally only for a day, and no longer. Under these circumstances hot weather is endurable, but imagine seven days and seven nights of furnace heat, with the musical accompaniments of flies and mosquitoes, and you can easily know, as we suppose all do, what Wilmington has been through in seven days. The oldest inhabitants declare that such a succession of heat is of unfrequent occurrence, and this is well sustained by the weather records many of which in this city have been faithfully kept and date as far back as the nineteenth century.

From a drug store on Market street we have obtained the following figures, showing the state of the thermometer taken at noon on the dates named :

The 29th of August, 1870 was distinguished for the unusual variations of the thermometer as during the afternoon it fell in two hours from 94 to 84. The average for the past seven days has been 95. which is too hot for comfort, as all can attest. It is conceded that that just past through is the hottest we have ever had But you never saw a person in all your life that did not contend that each day as fast as they occurred was the hottest of them all.
