BELGIANS CAPTURE
TOWN OF ROULERS

OVER 9,000 PRISONERS AND 300
GUNS CAPTURED IN OPERATION-GHENTUME TAKEN.

London. - Roulers, a Belgian town 13 miles northeast of Ypres, was captured, according to a dispatch received by the Evening News from the Belgian battle front.

British troops advancing in Belgium captured Cheluwe and are now about two miles outside of the Belgian railroad junction of Menin.

The situation has become fraught with intensely dramatic possibilities.

The Belgians got into Dixmude by a smart flanking movement and went through the town swiftly. Street fighting took place and a large party of the enemy held out obstinately in the town hall. All the Germans were killed or captured. An entire battery of 150 millimeter howitzers was captured in Houthulst forest.

British and Belgian troops on Saturday and Sunday took more than 9,000 prisoners.

King Albert's forces at dusk this evening were attacking the Germans at St. Peter on the Roulers-Menin road, and at Colliemolenhoek.

Belgian troops in their drive north and east of Ypres have captured 300 German guns. British troops in the same area took 97 guns.

The gallant little Belgian army, assisted by the British, is driving ahead in such a manner as to menace the German hold on the entire Belgian coast as far as Ostend.

Realizing that the ground from which they are being thrown is invaluable to them, the Germans are resisting heavily and have thrown in four divisions, at least, of reserves opposite the Belgians alone. One of these divisions contained elements of the regiments which were guilty of sacking Dinant.

So fast did the British advance in the Flanders area that the batteries through the Siegfried meshwork of trenches was naturally slow, but the allied troops succeeded almost everywhere.

Le Catelet, the key position to the whole sector between Bellicourt and Banteaux, was officially reported in allied hands.

Important fortified villages were carried in rapid succession. La Vacquerie, Nauroy, Bony and Villers-Guislain were taken early in the battle. The effects of the terrific allied bombardment were everywhere visible in earthworks smashed level, with ghastly peeps at what had gone on underneath.

Good news also came from the Belgian front. Houthulst village, lost by a counter attack, was retaken by King Albert's troops. Staden has been taken, and the whole Passchendaele Ridge system has been overrun.

During the day the Belgians counted more than 5,500 prisoners. On the St. Quentin front 4,000 Germans were captured.
