ANCHORAGE. (AP)-An urgent telegram asking assistance of the Republican party in restoring Alaskan trade and commerce "which completely collapsed under Democratic leadership." was dispatched to Senator Robert A. Taft Saturday by the Anchorage chamber of commerce directors.
The telegram, signed by chamber president Edward V. Davis, who remarked, "I'll probably lose caste with the Democrats since I've been one for many years," said in part:
"A plea is being made to Republicans after repeated pleas to government officials from President Truman on down failed to bring even encouraging replies.
"Alaska is being held hostage by warring steamship operators and unions at Seattle. Both sides are using the Territory's plight to force the other to yield. Alaskans are suffering from lack of food, and many payrolls have disappeared, abrogating the means of livelihood of good American families.
"Even a relief ship is unable to leave Seattle because the operators and unions cannot agree on selection of engineers.
"Will the Republican party make it possible for us to survive?"
