SUPPOSED BURGLAR CAUGHT.
At about six o'clock on Saturday evening, (21st) quite a little commotion was caused on the levee near Harris' warehouse.
A young man named George Smith has been stopping at the City Hotel for some days past, and from numerous suspicious circumstances our authorities have been led to believe that he was implicated in the attempt on Shearer's grocery store. Officer Snyder arrested him in the evening at the Black Hawk Saloon, where he had stepped in for a moment. While being escorted up Madison street, he took to his heels, ran down the alley by Burger's saloon, and reached Front street near Gus Stegler's saloon. He then ran down to the river and disappeared, but was afterwards found in the Jefferson street sewer. At the jail, where he was taken, he gave his name as George Foster. Probably the most that can be done with him will be to haul him up on the vagrant act.
