Winfield Ervin Jr., director of the Board of Juvenile Institutions of Alaska, visited in Nome yesterday with local law enforcement officials and Mrs. Dorothy Grant, who is the local representative of the Board.
Mr. Ervin said that the problem of housing delinquents is very acute since stateside institutions will no longer accept Alaskan children.
He stated that he has proposed that the Board take over buildings of the Seward Sanitorium, which were vacated in July, and create an Alaskan detention home with the hope that the new state legislature would realize the need and appropriate enough money to operate it with qualified personnel.
Mr. Ervin, who has been in business in Seward before his appointment to the Juvenile Board, has turned the business over to his two sons and is moving to Juneau to devote his time to his new work.
Mr. Ervin urged persons who had extra rooms in their homes to assist the program by offering them as foster homes. He said a definite need exists here.
Anyone interested may contact Mrs. Dorothy Grant.
