The Raleigh Register says the "Whig fires" are "burning brightly."
Where? In Georgia? The "Union" Whigs of that State have just repudiated Scott and nominated Webster for the Presidency.
In New York? It is stated, on good authority, that there are not less than five thousand Whigs in the City of New York alone, who will not support Scott. They know whose candidate he is.
In North Carolina? What mean those heavy Reid gains in Ashe, Rowan, Davidson, Cherokee, Buncombe, and Haywood? Does not the Register know that the Hon. Thomas L. Clingman, and the Hon. J. P. Caldwell, representatives in Congress from this State--the former from a Southern Rights District, and the latter from a Whig District--are against Scott! Is the Register in doubt as to fact that many prominent North Carolina Whigs have declared they cannot support Scott and Graham?
If the "Whig fires" are "burning brightly," it is only the last fitful flash from the smouldering ruins. The party itself was sacrificed in its late National Convention. It pulled down Webster and Fillmore, it is true, but it went down with them to rise no more. After this contest it will be a purely sectional concern, and then Seward will be seen at its head, as he is now felt along all its ranks.--Raleigh Standard.
