The New Town Laid Out at Muncy Creek—An Interesting Sketch of the Place and the Adjacent Mines.
DEFIANCE, June 8, 1886.
Editor News: I promised you a short squib from Spring Valley, and although I can scarcely twist the rheumatism out of the south-east quarter-section of my right leg, I still have summoned up sufficient presence of mind to carry out that intention in the accompanying way:
It will probably occur to you by a casual glance at the above heading that somewhat of a new situation has been established over here, and that out of the ashes of the faded camps of Spring Valley, Phoenix-like, Defiance has arisen for the rescue of poor and unfortunate White Pine.
The city of Defiance, although not an incorporated affair as yet, lies or is situated upon a broad and level flat at the foot of the Schell Creek Range, between the converging lines of Muncy and North Creeks, towards their confluence (if they have any). The location of the place is certainly very pretty and Cherry Creek, with her prestige as a handsome town-site, will, I am afraid, have to go to the wall.
The plat shows a large plaza with broad avenues leading therefrom and conveniently extensive lots, and by the way, I think I can put your print shop on the proper corner; but you mustn't give it away.
As far as the mines are concerned, I visited them all and I can assure you that they are away above par. I have got a wagon load of the ore on the road to Taylor and you will upon its arrival be able to form your own opinion.
The Grand Deposit shows a magnificent body of ore, and if the mine happened to be located in Leadville I would not answer for what figures the purchase price might attain.
The Twin Cedar and the Lone Cedar are two immense deposits of argentiferous galena, and alone would be in a Coloradan's eyes, a sufficient warrant for an extensive prospecting tour.
The Defiance, Mr. Cameron's property, and another mine, the Centennial, show heavy deposits of ore, while the number of claims uncovered and still liable to relocation, are very numerous.
While we have been laying out and entering the townsite, two of your Cherry Creek prospectors have slipped in and secured a splendid body of ore just above the Grand Deposit: I did not know they were here until yesterday when they put in an appearance at Squire Cameron's for powder and fuse. The lucky fellows are Pete Cannon and John Curtis. Perhaps you know them.
I had the pleasure of running across Mr. McCormick and from him learn that the Aurum mill will start on samples from Silver Canyon and Ruby Hill shortly. Mac has got into a fine property at Glencoe, and if anybody deserves good luck he does.
The cattle and sheep men of this region are all getting fat, and I presume rich, although they are somewhat reticent on the last proposition, but then you never can tell anything about that. They are a whole-souled lot and that is entirely sufficient.
The following programme for Defiance in conclusion, is what I understand will be carried out: A site for the Court House, extensive depot grounds, a handsome plaza with fountains and a pavilion, for the Spring Valley Cornet Band to discourse sweet strains from on Sunday afternoons: the best mines in Eastern Nevada, and the prettiest girls in the world, with Jim Sampson in charge of the "Gentlemen's Driving Park Stables," Jake Cameron supporting the dignity of the Judicial ermine, N. C. Noe running a fine brewery, and Gus Peters carefully looking after the ducats. Until I see you, ta-ta.
