Full Text
Extract of a letter from Capt. James M. Pollard, of the ship Liberty, to his owners in this city, dated Cadiz, June 29th, 1799.
I sailed from Gibraltar on the 5th inst. and arrived here the 10th: on the 18th got pratique, and on the 21st my papers were translated. I was not permitted to enter the port on account of my having touched at Gibraltar.
I have entered a protest, and to-morrow Mr. Leonard, the supercargo, is going to Madrid, to endeavour if possible to get the ship entered. There are two vessels here from Boston, in the same predicament as myself, and will shortly sail for the West-Indies.
French privateers are very numerous out of this port, and have taken a number of American vessels, a greater part of which have been condemned.
