The Court House Clique.
The Court House Clique, reposing with perfect safety in the overwhelming majorities heretofore cast by the "Democracy," most arrogantly assumed to over ride the popular will, by forcing the nomination of Dr. Quick on the convention, over their known preference for John C. Burton. They appeal to the apparent fairness by which the thing was done in open convention, but fail to vindicate the course of the Clique, from the old smoke pipe down to the merest whiffet of the party, to pack that Convention in favor of Quick, and in opposition to Burton. They seem to have forgotten in their arrogance and confidence of strength, the services of the Burtons in times past rendered the party.
No longer do they appeal to the military services which left John's right arm on the plain of Buena Vista, but like brigands, they throw up their hats for the man who will go farthest to promote their projects. Elated with success, and their confidence of victory, they decide to try the popular pulse to its utmost, and in defiance of common decency, they contract for the Iron fence. They now tremble at their own audacity, as wave succeeds wave of public indignation from every precinct and hamlet. The Clique are running "to and fro" in desperate effort to repair the fatal blunder. The hand-writing is upon the wall. Thou art weighed in the balance and found wanting. Go faithless servants, as "the sow to her wallow and the dog to his vomit."
