About one thousand persons, old and young, enjoyed courtesy rides on the Golden Nugget DC-6C of the Alaska Airlines, all day Saturday.
The formal dedication of Nome Terminal took place at 2 o'clock, when Charles Willis, president of the Alaska Airlines, presented Mayor Steffen Andersen with an engraved plaque for the new terminal.
Other speakers for the ceremony were Judge Walter Hodge, Senator Bill Beltz, Richard Gilbert, vice president of Alaska Airlines, Lee Shay, general manager, George Sharrock, the president of Alaska State Chamber of Commerce, and Walt Rollins, Alaska Airlines public relations official.
Although the day was unusually cold, the 40-piece Nome School Band played throughout the hour preceding the ceremony, and took part during the ceremony. Color guard was made up of members of the Civil Air Patrol Cadets.
The NWA Chamber of Commerce has presented for the terminal a unique display welcoming arrivals at the airport. Made of spotted seal and original drawings, it has been appropriately framed, and hangs facing the entrance of the new terminal.
All the speakers expressed their interest in the importance of the terminal for the future of Nome and this part of the new State.
Del Kampmann, local manager for Alaska Airlines, expressed his appreciation this morning for the wonderful cooperation given by the community, and especially to the Civil Air Patrol, Explorer Scouts, U. S. Weather Bureau, Nome School Band, Chamber of Commerce manager John McNees, North Star Restaurant and Hotel, Arctic Club, Nome Sanitary Service, Morgans, and the Eskimo dancers from both local groups.
