PLAN TO BOOST
ALASKAN ROAD,
OWNED BY U. S.

Special to The Leader.

WASHINGTON - Methods used in private enterprise to improve business will finally be adopted by the federal government in the management of the Alaska railroad, the only railroad owned and operated by the federal government.

The first step in that direction will be taken with the opening, on Jan. 15, of a passenger traffic office in Chicago, where tourist trade will be solicited.

Chicago Has Location.

Chicago was selected as the location, the interior department announced today, because of its advantageous position from a transportation point of view, and because a large portion of Alaska railroad passenger traffic originates in the middle west.

A variety of routes arranged for travel through interior Alaska, in each of which the Alaska railroad is an important part, and improvements in connection with road extension, hotel facilities, and development work in Mount McKinley National park have aided materially, it is stated, in building up travel to interior Alaska.

Deficit Takes Drop.

In the recent report of Secretary West, it is pointed out that the annual deficit resulting from the operation of the railroad was reduced $60,000,000 the past year, and that there was an increase in operating revenues of $118,051.76. The total deficit last year was $840,890.93.

Lack of proper equipment, and failure to make needed improvements, have contributed to the failure to place the railroad on a paying basis, but these improvements are being made, and the tourist travel that it will enable the railroad to handle will further reduce, it is believed, the deficit.
