Key West 76, Stranahan 50

The Key West High School basketball team, showing a complete about face, closed out their home season last night with a resounding 76 to 50 victory over Stranahan High.

It gives the locals a 9 - 9 season's record and the triumph broke a three-game losing streak.

Spectators could hardly believe their eyes as the Conchs swept to the win in the Gold Coast Conference game.

They applied the pressure at the start, utilizing a sharp defense and accurate shooting to wing to a 21 - 5 lead after the first eight minutes and then left the floor at the half with a solid 38-14 lead.

This, of course, was against the same team which beat the Key Westers up in Miami last Thursday night by a 67 to 65 count.

In that one the Conchs were guilty of an excessive number of fouls and the Stranahan cagers were able to win the game from the foul line.

Things were certainly different last night.

"Ecky" Solomon and Bill Zumberis led the locals' attack with each registering a total of 23 points for the night. The two combined for 28 of their total of 46 in the first half as they led the club to its big lead. They were deadly in their shooting.

In a preliminary game last night, the "Whites" beat the "Reds" in an exhibition game between two teams of eighth graders.

In the feature game, which saw the Conchs reach their scoring high for the season, the Stranahan youngsters, who are playing a varsity schedule for the first time this season, were unable to cope with the fast break of the Conchs as time after time Solomon and Zumberis clicked as the locals drove down the court. Powell and Zumberis controlled the backboards and the Conch defense kept the visitors shooting from far out with little success.

Conch Coach Harold Haskins used his second stringers liberally in the second half. Stranahan came to life in the final eight minutes to score 24 of their total of 50 points.

Renner led the visitors with an even dozen points.

Key West will now prepare for another road trip. The Conchs take on the Miami Tech Blue Devils on Friday night and then visit Seacrest for a return game on Saturday evening. The locals figure to win both of these tilts.

Carl Taylor and Charlie Powell both brothers of the varsity's Boog Powell, were the stars of the preliminary game. Young Charlie 'hit' for 12 points for the winners while Taylor led the losers with 10 points.
