Dr. J. Lawrence Smith, late of Charleston (S. C.) has received from the Sultan of Turkey the appointment of Geologist and Chief of the Department of Mines. In a late letter from Dr. S. to a friend in Charleston, he states that he had made a short geological excursion into the interior of Asia Minor, during which he discovered two coal mines and one of sulphur, all of which are of great value. He had also discovered gold and lead in some localities, though he had not explored them sufficiently to decide their value.
