An action of slander, brought by Sarah Keller, by her next friend Jacob Keller, vs. Henry Lohman, was tried at our Court last week. The slander was an aggravated one, charging the plaintiff with one of the vilest offences which humanity could commit. The plaintiff, an interesting girl of about 20 or 21 years of age, is the daughter of a respectable farmer residing in Upper Mount Bethel township, in this county. The defendant, a cabinet maker, residing in the same township. The plaintiff proved the words to have been spoken within a year before suit brought, and also repeatedly, for some years before. The defendant in mitigation of damages, as he said, attempted to prove facts which would induce a suspicion of the plaintiff's guilt, but in this entirely failed, all his witnesses expressly negatived these allegations. Judge Mallery delivered a very clear and decided charge, and the Jury, in a few minutes, brought in a verdict for four thousand dollars damages—the largest verdict ever given in a similar case in this section of country. We have heard of no decision that has given more general satisfaction to the public.—Misch.
